Axel-Springer-Verlagshaus (publishing house), Berlin

The new publishing house in the heart of Berlin.

The Axel Springer building in Berlin combines innovative architecture with sustainable design: a 4,000 m² rooftop landscape enhances quality of stay, promotes biodiversity, and supports the urban microclimate.

Top-down view of a multifunctional rooftop garden atop a modern city high-rise. The roof is divided into zones: lawns, raised beds with vegetables and ornamental plants, seating areas made of wood and concrete, several round water tanks, sun loungers, a covered glass structure (possibly a skylight or pool), and technical installations. Curved walkways and geometric shapes—circular, rectangular, and triangular—structure the space. The design reflects a fusion of urban sustainability and recreational quality.

The project

With the construction of the new Axel Springer publishing house in Berlin, the architecture firm OMA realized a modern media center. Its centerpiece is a rooftop landscape of approximately 4,000 m², featuring both extensive and intensive greenery. Designed as a space for relaxation, events, and interaction, it serves over 5,000 employees. In addition to its high design quality, the roof performs key ecological functions such as rainwater retention, heat protection, and air purification. Implementation required complex system solutions for structural support, layering, and irrigation across multiple building levels.
