Facade greening on the archive building of the Berlin State Museums

A wide range of greening features were created for the new archive building. The combination of facade greenery, in the courtyard and in the open spaces creates a harmonious overall appearance and enhances the outdoor areas in a sustainable way.

The project

This included the creation of intensively planted raised beds with integrated irrigation systems in the lower-level courtyard areas, as well as the installation of cable systems for vertical greening on the concrete curtain wall elements. In addition, we planted large trees in heavily frequented outdoor areas and incorporated 26 solitary trees as defining design elements.

The work was complemented by the creation of planting areas using native plant species and the establishment of extensive dry grassland areas in the outdoor grounds. As the work was closely tied to the progress of the building construction, it was carried out in stages. Particular challenges were posed by the hard-to-access inner courtyards and the installation of the facade greening using a 40-metre-high aerial work platform.
