Humboldt Forum

Outdoor spaces surrounding the new palace building, Berlin-Mitte

The outdoor spaces surrounding the Humboldt Forum at Berlin Palace were developed between 2019 and 2022. The result is a clearly structured outdoor space that serves as a link between Baroque architecture, a modern cultural institution and public use – open, robust and offering a high quality of experience for visitors.

The project

Natural stone materials were primarily used in the design of the outdoor areas: kerbs, paved surfaces, staircases and open spaces with water-bound aggregate surfacing. Modern seating between newly planted large trees provides places to sit in the much-visited forum surrounding the reconstructed Berlin City Palace, close to Museum Island, Berlin Cathedral and the Lustgarten. The result is a public space that bridges the gap between ceremonial occasions and everyday life.
