Types of green roofs

Two approaches to a green roof

There are two main types of green roofs: intensive and extensive green roofing. Depending on the building type and intended use, one approach may be more suitable than the other.

Intensive Green Roofing

Intensive green roofs are ideal for rooftop areas designed for recreational or open-space use. This type requires a thicker substrate layer (25–100 cm), allowing for nearly unlimited design possibilities. The maintenance effort is comparable to that of a conventional garden or outdoor area. The space gained through intensive green roofing creates additional “green lungs” in our cities and offers extra leisure and recreational areas.

Extensive Green Roofing

In contrast, extensive green roofs are perfect for large-scale greening, particularly where the primary goal is to enhance the building’s microclimate and provide cooling benefits. This type uses a thinner soil layer and is planted mainly with mosses, sedum, and other hardy, drought-resistant species.

Installation and maintenance of green roofs

Installation phase

The implementation of a carefully planned green roof is a critical step that requires a combination of experience and expertise. Costs vary depending on the type of green roofing and the specific requirements of the building. Our specialists work closely with you to plan and deliver a solution that meets both your expectations and your budget.

Maintenance phase

The maintenance and care of a green roof are essential to ensure its long-term durability and effectiveness. While intensive green roofs require regular upkeep, extensive systems involve relatively low maintenance. Our regional partner teams offer customized maintenance plans to keep your green roof in excellent condition at all times.

Benefits of green roofs

A green roof offers a wide range of benefits that together explain its growing popularity. From an ecological perspective, a conventional bare flat roof cannot compete with the advantages of a vegetated rooftop.

Climate Regulation

The vegetation and soil layer cool and insulate the building, reducing the need for mechanical cooling. This helps lower energy consumption and positively impacts energy costs.

Air Quality

The plants on your roof can improve local air quality by filtering fine dust and nitrogen oxides while producing oxygen.

Water Management

Plants and soil enhance water retention, resulting in delayed and reduced runoff—an especially valuable benefit in urban environments.

Visual Enhancement

A green roof enhances the overall appearance of your building and can even contribute to the visual appeal and value of an entire neighborhood.
